Breaking
At L & N Equine, we pride ourselves in the way that we start our babies and many satisfied clients can attest to the superb job that we do. From day one, we treat our babies with kindness and understanding but still ensure that they respect the individuals both on the ground and on their backs. We begin the breaking process by tacking each baby in a large 14×14 breaking stall. Once they understand the fundamentals of turning, stopping, and standing quietly to accept a saddle and bridle, we belly them carefully with one person on their back and one person on their head, turning both ways in a calm and controlled manner.
In just a few days time, our babies are comfortable steering and stopping with a rider on their back in the stall and at this point, they progress to the round pen where they learn to go forward in all three gaits, to stop obediently, and to turn quietly. Typically, after 7-12 days in the stall and round pen, our babies progress to the Indoor arena where they learn to trot figure eights and pick up the correct leads upon request. After the basics are established, we hack out in groups of two or three up and down the hills of the farm and around our 2 1/2 mi turf gallop and allow each horse to explore the outside world in quiet, relaxing atmosphere. Be sure to check out our Videos link to see a sampling of how our young horses begin their under saddle education.
While every horse is different, we find that after 45-60 days, our babies are ready to head to track to progress in their training and begin gate and speed work when they are fit enough.
